Playing Golf: A Guide to the Game
Introduction:
Golf is a sport that combines precision, strategy, and patience. Played on beautifully landscaped courses, it challenges both the body and mind. Whether for leisure, competition, or social connection, golf offers a rewarding experience for players of all skill levels. At Ashton we encourage people to start golf and we want you to enjoy it. We are a 9 hole course, very pretty and welcome visitors. The cost to play is £12 per round, no increase from last year. Please call us to book a tee time. We are open every day from 8.30am till 8pm, Sunday we close at 6pm
The Basics of Golf
Golf is played by hitting a ball into a series of holes on a course using as few strokes as possible. A standard course has 18 holes, each with a unique layout and distance. Players use different clubs depending on the shot type and distance required.
Equipment
  • Clubs: Drivers, irons, wedges, and putters
  • Golf balls: Designed for distance, control, or spin
  • Tees: Used to elevate the ball for the first stroke of each hole
  • Golf bag: Carries clubs and accessories
Rules and Etiquette
Golf is known for its strong emphasis on etiquette and respect for other players and the course.
Key Rules
  • Play the ball as it lies unless a rule allows relief.
  • Count every stroke, including penalties.
  • The player farthest from the hole plays first. (please do not walk ahead of your playing partners. Firstly it is dangerous and secondly, not good etiquette)
Etiquette Tips
  • Stay quiet and still while others are hitting.
  • Repair divots and ball marks on the green.
  • Do not use an iron or wedge on any of the greens
  • Keep pace with the group ahead. If you are slow please allow other groups to play through
Playing the Game
Each hole begins at the tee and ends at the green, where the hole is located. The goal is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible.
Common Shots
  • Drive: The first shot from the tee, usually with a driver.
  • Approach: A mid-range shot aimed at reaching the green.
  • Chip: A short shot near the green to get the ball close to the hole.
  • Putt: A gentle stroke on the green to roll the ball into the hole.
Scoring
Golf uses a stroke-play scoring system, where each stroke counts as one point. The total number of strokes determines the player’s score. If you are just starting golf please dont worry about being over par. If you have had 10 shots on the hole and other are waiting please pick up your ball. Remember, you will get better with practise.
Common Terms
  • Par: The expected number of strokes for a hole.
  • Birdie: One stroke under par.
  • Bogey: One stroke over par.
  • Eagle: Two strokes under par.
Benefits of Playing Golf
Golf offers physical, mental, and social benefits. Walking the course provides exercise, while the focus required improves concentration and patience. It also fosters friendships and networking opportunities in a relaxed outdoor setting.
Tips for Beginners
  • Take lessons to learn proper technique.
  • Practice regularly at a driving range.
  • Start with shorter courses or par-3 layouts.
  • Focus on consistency rather than power.
Conclusion
Playing golf is more than just a sport—it’s a lifelong pursuit of skill, strategy, and enjoyment. With practice and patience, anyone can experience the satisfaction of a well-played round and the beauty of the game. And remember - Its supposed to be FUN!!
